Solution to killer superbug found in Norway – Yahoo! News

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Twenty-five years ago, Norwegians were also losing their lives to this bacteria. But Norway's public health system fought back with an aggressive program that made it the most infection-free country in the world. A key part of that program was cutting back severely on the use of antibiotics.

Now a spate of new studies from around the world prove that Norway's model can be replicated with extraordinary success, and public health experts are saying these deaths — 19,000 in the U.S. each year alone, more than from AIDS — are unnecessary.

“It's a very sad situation that in some places so many are dying from this, because we have shown here in Norway that Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can be controlled, and with not too much effort,” said Jan Hendrik-Binder, Oslo's MRSA medical adviser. “But you have to take it seriously, you have to give it attention, and you must not give up.”

Interview: Linden prepares for an OpenSim future

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

A future where the Second Life Grid is a minor player in a sprawling Metaverse of thousands of competing virtual worlds sounds like a bad outcome for Linden Lab. But company executives say that’s exactly the plan.

In the wake of the recent first avatar teleport between Second Life and an OpenSim region, Linden VP Joe Miller, better known to Second Life residents as “Joe Linden,” spoke to Reuters about Linden Lab’s long-term strategy.

Why aren’t America’s psychics helping keep us safe?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

If psychics can do what they claim, why aren't they hired by the TSA or airport security to identify the terrorists? Why are they telling fortunes for $50 a pop in New Age shops instead of in salaried positions at security command centers, using their psychic powers to find people who have evil on their minds and explosives on their person, who want to kill hundreds of innocent Americans on Christmas Day?

Even if the psychics can't narrow it down to a specific passenger (though I see no reason why they wouldn't be able to), even if they could accurately tell police which day (even which week or month) terrorists will attack, that would be invaluable. Security officials would know that people flying any other time don't need to be screened, and tighter security measures would be imposed during the specified time frame.
